Sue Barnes

Program Manager

Sue joined the UC Davis Retiree Center as Program Manager in February 2009. Prior to joining the Center, she managed the UC Davis Craft Center from 1990-95 and 2001-2009. At the Craft Center, Sue was responsible for the overall management of a 10,000 square foot recreational center that offered 400 classes per year in 10 different craft areas, from welding to ceramics. From 1999-2001, Sue worked as the Director of Recreation for the then newly-constructed University Retirement Community in Davis. She was hired before the facility opened, and was responsible for starting up and equipping all of the recreational facilities, including the swimming pool, fitness center, woodshop, darkroom, auditorium, activity room, art studio, computer lab, library, and billiard lounge. In addition, she recruited resident volunteers to assist her in developing a comprehensive recreational program for the community, including classes, day trips, interest groups, support groups, and a variety of social, educational and cultural programs.

As Program Manager of the Retiree Center, Sue is looking forward to working with retirees to enhance existing activities, and develop innovative new programs and services to help retired faculty and staff stay connected to the university. She is passionate about serving the needs of older adults, and welcomes feedback about how the center can better serve the needs of our retirees.

Marjorie Ahl

Program Assistant

Marjorie Ahl came to the Retiree Center in 2007 as the Program Assistant. Growing up in Davis, she participated in campus activities such as watching the cows being milked, talking to the beagles, checking on the baby pigs, sticking her hand inside a cow, and being a bumble bee in the Picnic Day parade. She also watched as her parents prepared for the Goose Stew, the Steak Bake, and many other activities of the Faculty Club. Working at the Retiree Center has allowed her to relive these happy memories. She had to go away to college, where she received a B.S. degree in Home Economics, and a minor in Business. She worked for ten years for Xerox Corporation in their office systems division, mostly as a systems analyst and trainer on computers, networks, and network administration. After the birth of her daughter, she worked as an Administrative Assistant in various jobs, using her computer skills to improve office procedures.

As Program Assistant of the Retiree Center, Marjorie uses her strong computer skills to keep the office buzzing, provide administrative support to both the Retirees' and Emeriti Associations, and produce the public persona of the Retiree Center through mailings, emails, flyers, newsletters, and the website.
