May is Older Americans Month…
In honor of the occasion, the UC Davis Retiree Center is sponsoring a “Healthy ‘til 100” speaker series. Whether you are concerned about maintaining your own health as you age, or you are caring for an aging parent, you will learn valuable information about the importance of developing healthy habits in several different components of life—including one’s emotional, physical, intellectual, and environmental well-being.
All lectures will be held in the Cabernet Room, 2nd floor of the Silo (above Carl’s Jr. & Taco Ball). R.S.V.P.’s are not needed. Driving & parking directions are detailed below.
The Emotions of Aging
Friday, May 1, 12-1 pm
Building and maintaining healthy relationships is important throughout life, and even more so as one ages. Maria Tebbutt will emphasize the importance of maintaining good mental health while covering topics such as the depression and grief that can occur as one faces the inevitable changes that occur with aging.

Nutrition and Aging

Cognitive Aging: Use It or Lose It
Friday, May 15, 12-1 pm
Many neurological changes occur as a natural part of the aging process. Dr. Lisa Miller will discuss several important areas of cognitive functioning in later life: communication, comprehension, and health literacy, and will outline factors that support healthy cognitive aging, such as mental and physical exercise.
Dr. Lisa Miller is an associate professor in the Human and Community Development at UC Davis. Dr. Miller holds both undergraduate and graduate degrees in psychology, and she completed her postdoctoral fellowship at Brandeis University. Dr. Miller's research, funded by the National Institutes of Health, focuses on factors that support healthy cognitive aging.
Universal Home Design
Friday, May 22, 12-1 pm
The number of Americans over age 65 will double from today’s 35 million to 70 million by 2030. The overwhelming majority of older Americans say that they want to continue living in their own homes indefinitely – even as their circumstances change. In this workshop, Ashley Duke will outline several principals of universal design, and provide an overview of supportive, lighting, and green technologies that can make a house into a home for life. These principals and technologies, which can be incorporated into existing homes or new construction, are currently on display at the Eskaton Demonstration Home in Roseville, which is open for complementary tours by appointment.
Ashley Duke has a Bachelors Degree in Gerontology from California State University Sacramento. Her first passion is empowering people to live the lives they want regardless of their circumstances. Being a part of Eskaton’s Research and Planning division as a Demonstration Home Educator helps her live out her passion. “Education is power; understanding the options that are available empowers us to make well informed decisions that will affect the rest of our lives”
